Dec 28, 2017 If you launch a Microsoft Office application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,) on Mac OS X, you may receive a prompt about launching a Microsoft AU Daemon for the first time. You are opening the application “Microsoft AU Daemon” for the first time. Are you sure you want to open this application? The application is in a folder named “MacOS”.
This software is the abbreviation for “Microsoft Auto-Update Daemon”, which refers to an application that runs in the background (the common term for which Daemon is used in the operating system) and performs automatic update tasks.
Here’s what happens: When you launch a Microsoft application, it checks to see if software updates are available. If this is the case, another application must be started to replace the old copy of Word with the new one; the process that does this is called “Microsoft AU Daemon”, and you see a prompt, probably because it asks your computer to change (to install the new software). As you did not launch the Microsoft AU daemon personally by double-clicking on it, macOS is careful and asks your permission before letting this application run: The operating system is pretty secure by default for these things, so you must be personally involved in everything that changes what is on your computer.
